Just one addition to the helpful comments from Russ, which is that I would not 'prise' the front edge of the instrument binnacle/shroud as damage is easily caused, but rather apply gentle taps by hand along the upper rim that should then release the base. Regards, Matthew T.

I see what you mean Matthew, I'll try that next time. I used a flat blade one end and ran it along which released it nicely, without damage.
I hadn't realised you had mentioned the method to Graeme earlier today...doesn't hurt to reiterate!

:D Goddd! I think the seller told a fib about his 'mate' looked at the cambelt and "its ok" as I now know you can't check it without a whole project of jack up and wheel off etc. I just don't believe he did that.
I'll need to change it out of caution.
The service history is stamped and dated with mileage but no receipts..
Otherwise it goes very well.
Can now confirm the rear window heater is inop. Also the rear passenger's window doesn't open.
Fdv hisses a lot and its beginning to get on my tits.
Drivers door seal is damaged.
Discovered the neat little coat hooks in the rear

Heated rear screen, could be a broken wire where the tailgate hinges. Or being unlucky that every element is broken across the screen.

Rear windows will only work if the centre console switchs are in working order as I found with my latest car!!!

if one is duffel then even the door mounted switch won't make a difference.. try the centre console switch for the other window and confirm.. if its so let me know tons here can chuck one in your box...

I'll get looking at the heated rear window but the side window works from neither the center switch or the door, the off side one works fine.
Strangely for an XM the sunroof seems to tilt and slide ok and most important; doesn't leak!

Just to add: I love the variable int wiper but find that on occasion it goes a bit off set close to normal intermittent speeds and loses the essential 4 second intervals. Closest you get is 7 sec. If I negotiate with it I can get it back to 4 sec but its not reliable. I suspect its the slider switch itself but am open to ideas.

Then there is no window regulator in the door then is my guess if you have tried the switch swap and still got nothing... Robert smart might have a regulator as he has an off side one on ebay...

Hi Graeme,

Run the slider up and down its travel a few times roughly and quickly, sometimes that helps. Also worth trying it just before it comes to the edge of its travel. I have had them not wipe at all when at end of travel.

I have rear window regs too if you need one.

I suspect a broken wire for the window problem.

There's something oddly mystical about this XM! The abs issue yesterday seems to have cleared for now - its drier today, wonder if that's a factor. But excitingly the hitherto right hand display sprang to life! All I did was prod one of the sunk adjust buttons. Time and temp appeared, time remains on after switching off. I fitted front and rear hyperactive spheres and front corner ones and the ride is better. The front does odd things though: occasionally goes choppy at speed, feels like it careers u und down by about a foot. Sometime feels a bit harsh then other times it.floats like a CX.
It's a very changeable character - it's definitely female
