MPG's

Post by beko1987 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 6:54 am

I know it's probably a stupid question, but I've only got 154 miles to my last £50, with fairly sedate driving (halfway line to light came on when I got to work this morning). Is this normal, or should I be concerned? Is there anything I can check engine wise to increase this? Computer says an average of 23.6 the last time I looked.

It would help if you tell us what type XM you are driving :)

Sorry, updated my sig!

The 25mpg sounds about right, I was just a bit surprised that it's munched through £50 of fuel un 150 miles! Didn't know if there was anything that usually gums up and causes it to run rich or anything that I could tweak! Going on a long run at the weekend, will put some injector cleaner through and see if that helps.

The fuel needle does drop if I'm say, manouvering around a carpark on tickover etc more than driving around normally.

Hey ho, I'm sure I'll adjust! Or lookout for a 2.1td advertised locally! Anyone converted a 2.0 to LPG? For the cost of it and the miles I do it probably won't save me any money at all though.

Sam

you will find that once on the motorway and a steady 70 you will get 30+mpg - it's where the TCT is most suited to.

I only got 670 miles out of N477 from a brimmed full tank on the way to Scotland but I probably lost the best part of a gallon over the couple of days with the injector pipe being adrift. New glow plugs tomorrow so it should improve (become cheaper) as I start to run on veggie!

450 miles a tank should be about right on R267 (500+ on a long, steady run)- but I think you've been driving it harder as you got the eml off again!

When we met up at beaconsfield, my average speed for the trip from the Forest to central London and back was done at an average of 49mph and about 24.5 mpg iirc - and that was hammering it.

The EML light has been on and off recently, although I;ve not been driving it *that* hard! On pay day, I'll brim the tank and start using the m40 to get to work (J5-4, then A404 for a few miles) and see if it improves, rather than a b road with hills and idiot 25mph drivers in 60 zones (boils my piss that does).

Got a 300+ mile trip to Peterborough to do this weekend too, may take M40/M25/A1 and see what happens rather than M40 to Northampton then A45/A605 for most of the way.

I usually got 800 miles + from my 2.1 going to Scotland, average 50-55 mpg but the younger ones among you probably wouldn't tolerate my driving :)

I'm going to try and potter home at 60-65mph tonight and see what happens! I love the XM enough to tolerate the higher fuel cost, although I'll need to adjust my budget accordingly (read buy less cr@p from ebay on payday etc)

Was just curious if there would be anything mechanical or sensorish that would help matters. The EML light is on, would be interested to get that read soon, I have a plan for that though.

Sadly Sam, the TCT is not an economy engine. The same engine is fitted to my Activa and I'd say 25mpg around town is fair but on a run that should improve considerably as when driven in the style of Peter N they can return good economy. I once saw 39mpg from one of my Activas on a long motorway run at 70mph...

If you're near me then drop in and have a diagnostic session, a cuppa and a natter. The EML light being on might not be helping matters.

I came home via the mway and it was better. I know part of it is going from the economy of the zx, but when I had my Puma the lambda put the engine light on and its mpg nosedived, so I won't rule out actual issues yet!

You're Newport Pagnell way aren't you Jim? I'd love to pop over but its a bit far, unless I drop the missus off in MK for some shopping, or just ask her if I can come!

Is it OK if I PM you when I know when its likely to be?
