Gold XMs

Post by Roland » Fri Apr 26, 2013 8:35 am

Hello there,
I have spotted a 1990 automatic Gold XM for sale in France, it has done 77,000 kms
I haven't owned an XM before, but my partner has, also an automatic S1. We currently have a S2 Xantia which we love, we have had a lot of Citroëns in the past; GS, GSA, CX prestige, AX etc etc
Is it true that there was a design fault with the front suspension mounts with the first XM's? And the automatic gearbox, Are they ok?
Grateful for any advice before going to see the car, it has a beautiful interior in tan leather, I have always lusted after the gold colour, I think it really suits the car, how lon was this colour available for? Were there any S2s produced in it?
Regards Roland

Hi Roland

Welcome to the forum

The main problem with early XMs is the electrical system, but by this time I'm sure that's been sorted out, mechanically they are pretty similar throughout the range. Auto boxes are not a favourite of mine on any car but I don't think they are any worse on the XM, they do need regular oil changes to keep them in good health though.

Don't know much about the colour but it is fairly rare, otherwise just drive it and see if it feels OK. Its unlikely that it won't need something doing to it, they usually do, but as they are getting very rare now its really Hobsons choice, if you want it and its not falling to pieces, buy it. Unless you can DIY or know a good Citroen mechanic they can be expensive to maintain, I have always maintained my own so its not been to expensive.

They are a very nice car, I have run them for over 15 years although mine have always bee diesels because I used to do a lot of miles so the economy mattered. If you like it go for it.

They are gorgeous..

In fact I rather like the whole car  Shame it's not got the almost biscuit-colour leather as seen in the first example :( That is absolutely lovely :P

I know it is a lovely colour interior, that door needs work but it is the colour scheme that really appeals to me, I'll let you know how I get on
