I got in trouble in Morocco for not carrying my driving licence with me (was stopped for speeding). The gendarme wasn't amused! I always carry my insurance certificates in the car, saves having to go to a Police Station later if you need to present them.

Ask MID is very useful for checking up on the insurers. In the past they have had the wrong description for my car, and an incorrect registration number that was close to what it shoudk have been brought up my car details.

MID database is run by Experian (who also do credit referencing for loans, credit cards etc). They do update daily. However, they will only process that data which has actually been supplied by insurers! The insurers get their information from clients directly which is normally processed quite quickly -(a day or two usually) or from brokers. Information from brokers falls into two categories - that supplied by the big boys like AA (this is likely to get processed by them within 2-6 days + insurers day or two) or smaller brokers - they can be slower. Smaller brokers don't always extract info and send each night, so can take longer - MID charge for each process run. A not so obvious reason for delay in brokers advising insurers is that the broker will often not want to advise of policy lapses for a few days, as sometimes the punter cancels the policy but then changes their mind and setting up a new policy can be a pain.
The rule is ALL changes must be sent and updated by MID within 14 days, however. the changes usually take place somewhat sooner. The insurers potentially face penalties if they fail to meet the target (expressed in percentage terms). The Government may well reduce the period allowed for updates in due course. The police tend to assume policy changes are instantaneous and you will have to prove otherwise if your details show up wrongly. Checking the MID database yourself IS a good idea!

I enjoyed driving a Clio with a boot in North Africa, but I didn't get a ticket :) :) sorry Robert......I particularly liked the false radio fascia. I thought we had a radio but it was a fake! I think Dacia's nowadays have real radio's! Can't help it but I have a week spot for the Dacia....:)
