Norman now has a fully illuminated gear indicator and Robert, excellent on the ball-ended top mounting screws. I was terrified to pull too hard on Norman's so I removed the nuts and washers first and then pulled the studs out with a pair of pliers and in doing so skinned the back of my hand on the top of the dash
I found the studs go back in an awful lot easier than they come out!
Norman is 50p richer as of this afternoon. 50p and a big needle he uses to adjust washer jets was retrieved from behind his instruments.
I'd wondered what I could hear sliding around my dash for some time and when I did my bulb I found a coin there too but not so valuable as Norman's. It was an European 10cent coin. Useless to me. Jaap, would you like it?

I also advised how to do the starter relay mod on another V6 XM today, the one belonging to Chris570. His was getting harder and harder to start and sometime could take up to 20 turns of the key before the starter motor would play... He stood this for months. How I don't know, mine only did it occasionally but even then it bugged me to the point I just had to do the mod.
A V6 Xantia also visited with an intermittent starting problem but that was found to be caused by the gear position switch on the gearbox that permits the starter to operate in P and N only. They do fail occasionally.
before fitting a spare I had a go at fixing the old one. they're riveted together and easy to disassemble but that's as far as it goes. Inside they have a set of naked microswitches and the innards are made of cheese; any attempt to try to disassemble further for contact cleaning breaks a bit of critical cheese off and ruins the switch. So, if they fail then replacement is needed. Only problem is that cost getting on for £110

Where is that switch (the P/N) operated one, located? I'd like to know so I can salvage the one on the car I am dismantling.
Talking about coins, I found a nice coin in it, for a while we hoped to have found a coin from about 1292 from your Kind Edward I.
It looks really genuine.....but it must be a fake

I don't know on the HP18 gearbox where the switch is. I'd guess it'll be in a similar place to the HP20 and that'll be on the selector shaft; the one operated by the gear cable..
On the HP18 the switch is only for indication purposes and to prevent the car being started in anything other than P or N but on the HP20 it has a a very critical additional role to tell the gearbox ECU what position the selector is in... If it goes faulty the ECU gets very upset.

Just recovered from an evening of karting at Daytona Milton Keynes. It was laid on as a corporate team-building exercise. Absolutely massive fun and we enjoyed four races - three heats and a Grand Prix final...
The track was soaking wet and the karts wore slicks - cue lots of spins and epic slides!
It just about did for me. I could barely get out of the kart and walk at the end of it and got home to find a blocked drain
I had to rod it there and then.
I've only just about regained consciousness...

Nice work Jim! What bulb does it take? Mine's blown (change indicator still works, can see it if the suns in the right place), but I don't want to strip the dash out and not have the right bulb, I imagine driving to hellfrauds with the dash out will be interesting! Sam, you just need standard R286 capless bulbs like these on the 'bay.
The same bulb is used all over the dash and it's best to buy a job lot say as in the advert. get 30 and test each bulb before fitting and before reassembling the dash. Just pull the old bulbs out of the black cap and insert the new ones. Test when inserted into the cap. I use a little 12v battery for the job and find in a batch of 10 at least one is dead so get more than you need and replace them all as a job-lot.
The gear indicator bulb and the bulbs for the triple gauge it sits in are concealed behind a daughter-board which must be removed from the back of the instrument pod to gain access. In addition, the bulb for the gear indicator is further obscured by a black plastic cover over the daughter-board...
