XM on TV

Post by russ92xmsed » Tue Aug 13, 2013 3:16 pm

Was watching a prog on BBC4 last night....I know, how sophisticated!! it was a program about architectural projects that were never built here in Britain. Included a large modern town where you had to drive on the roofs of the buildings. The roads designed to be built on the buildings to keep the cars out the way.

Any hoo, as the presenter was driving her horrid Toyota Avensis down the M40, I think, a Green mk2 XM overtook her!
Very strange the sudden recognition of seeing one and reacting to it when you least expect to see one.

If you want to see it and can be bothered, might be on I player. About 40 mins in. Prog is called Unbuilt Britian.

They really did have some horrible ideas for towns. There was a plan for Coventry to have flyover roads leading from the ring road to the central car parks in the city. I know people hate the Coventry ring road but the real problem isn´t the road, it´s the horrible way the streets either side of it were amputated. They left odd plots of grass and dead gable walls. If the streets and the ring road fitted together more tightly you would hardly notice the ring road most of the time. Digression over.

Russ, I watch BBC4 almost exclusively with just an occasional foray into BBC2 territory so you're in good company!

I wanted to see that programme too and only realised it was on when seeing the trailer for the second part.. It should be on the I Player but if not it'll be repeated soon enough...

I know a lot about new and experimental towns having lived in and around one for most of my adult life...

Caught the programme on the repeat last night. Interesting. Town and city architects often take good care not to live in the areas they design, of course.

Saw the green XM whooshing past on the M4 - or was it Westway? - but nearly missed it!

I enjoyed the prog too. Love the glass tower meant for north London. Looks like a huge Lava Lamp!
Admittedly it was a brief appearance, no idea if it was M4, M40 M6 or M1!!....it was certainly London i think.

I think it is a P reg. You can freeze it on iplayer and just make it out. Exactly 40 mins in for those who want to look closely.

It was the elevated section of the Westway. I saw it last night.

However, any programme about design or architecture cannot be taken seriously if the presenter has a Toyota. An Audi would be a too knowing self-parody, a Bristol would indicate considerable individuality, but a Citroen SM or XM should be mandatory, just not with a roll neck sweater.

Oh yes.

I've been taking the 210 out a bit more though - sold it, but the purchaser was a bit too mean, so I'm using up all the diesel before it is collected! I pick up the V6 on Monday.
