Xac informs me that the server has crashed and is corrupt and not able to start...

Coincidentally, my Windows XP PC is also corrupted today. It boots as far as logging in, but the desktop never appears.

The common thing here is Windows Patches (updates) Mike. The 15th is the day they normally download and get automatically applied if you are so set up...
I've not been at work for a couple of days so I don't know if there's a problem with this months' batch but it wouldn't surprise me. It's happened before.
The FCF and BXC are back up now and if you are still seeing the maintenance holding page you may need to refresh your DNS.
