We do know there is a leak, it leaked fuel after trying to start it and when we pushed it to another space it leaked petrol all over the floor.

Oops... Must follow Jim's advice and read threads more carefully...

If it is a fuel return hose that is leaking, check hat a fuel line has not been crushed on the way back to the tank, the return lines are generally not rated for full pump pressure.

If the fuel line is perished which is quite likely given the leak, is it one piece from fuel tank to the injectors, if so roughly how long and what size. My local motor factors has a selection but I need to know what size and length. May as well take some fuel hose with me.

most citroens have either plastic or metal fuel lines ( feed and return ) running the length of the car with rubber were they terminate at each end,

i havent had much to do with XM's as yet,
but as they are the same period as the BX i would think they will have metal front to rear pipes,

and probably be 8mm internal diameter,

DO NOT REPLACE IT WITH CLOTH BOUND FUEL LINE as this is a fire hazard in its self,
also dont useplastic reinforced fuel line either, as this goes hard and brittle,

one of these rubber sections will almost certainly be perished

OK thanks, and is it 8mm like Malcolm says?

My local motor factors, an old fashioned one that is nice and messy with lots of cubby holes with sump plug seals, nuts and bolts etc has reels of rubber fuel hose of various sizes so will ask for a couple of metres which will probably only be a couple of quid.

But need to know what size hose. Will get some petrol clips as well. Spoke to the lady yesterday and she reckons there's always been a problem with it causing it not to start? It belonged to her brother who has sadly passed away, the confusion about the diesel/petrol issue was because she got mixed up with his green M reg diesel 2.1 that he crashed. Apparently he was a member of Citronian, but not sure if he belonged to the forums, his name was Michael.

Return is smaller than the feed pipe. 8mm & 6mm is my guess.
A look at the rubber hoses under the back seat of any XM will tell.
