Driveshaft boots split
On the recent TCT I've acquired, both boots on the driveshafts are split. Are they are difficult job to replace and I've noticed that you can get split ones that come with an adhesive, I can't imagine those being very secure?

Re: Driveshaft boots split
Don't go for those.
They won't last long.
Difficult: if you've never done that job before, than maybe. It was the first 'big' job I ever did on a car years ago.
You need to take loose the drive shaft of course. Good way to change your gear box oil that should be done at some interval anyway. You will need right socket to undo the bolt of the drive shaft and preferably a helper to push the brake pedal hard so you can undo that bolt with an extension bar. Other than that I would advise some rubber gloves cause it's a dirty job but nothing much to it! It will take some strength to pull the new rubber over the joint. Good luck!

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go.
While I'm at it, what type gearbox oil do I need for this box, I remember reading that it's imperative that the correct oil is used.

Most manual Citroen boxes use Total BV 75W80 Transmission Manual Gear Box Oil. Try ebay if you can't get it locally eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Total-BV-75W8 ... 2a2e39a780
Other oil companies make equivalent products eg Esso

if so they dont drop/loose any gear oil on pulling drive shafts out,
even though its not a bad idea to replace the gear oil,
they just use
https://www.google.co.uk/#q=dexron+2
isnt there a post on one of the forums were Total oils are offering CCC or FCF members 15% discount and free carriage on online orders,
i'll try and find the link

Re: Driveshaft boots split
I fitted a stretch boot to one of mine last year, crikey it was hard work to stretch it over.
My advice would be to either split the joint if you can, but it usually snaps the cir-clip, or remove the shafts, take them to a local garage and have stretch boots fitted using their expander.
Well worth the £5 they will charge you.

It's still pretty hard going even with the proper cone-shaped expander Will. Lubrication is the key...Dieselman wrote:I fitted a stretch boot to one of mine last year, crikey it was hard work to stretch it over.

A garage will probably have an air operated stretcher.

Re: Driveshaft boots split
The joints are easy enough to get off if you have a decent vice, use a fairly heavy hammer and a metal drift, I use a selection of old gearbox shafts but any bit of about 1/2" metal rod will do. Clamp the shaft in the vice and pull the boot back, place the end of the drift against the inner end of the joint and the shaft and drive it outwards, a good clout will drive it off, works first time if you hit it hard enough.
