I only seen bent valves ONCE jim, however, been VERY sucessfull with replaceing the Cap Bearings and worked for some time after.

Its a Very dooable thing, mind you the amount of cap bearings I have now got theres a good chance I can get some to fit.

I had a 309 years ago.. which I broke a belt and caps and cam, I messed with caps for a few hours and got three to fit. I continued to use the car for another year!!

As I say Paul, you have the magic touch with cam caps along with much else :D I don't...

The same can in theory happen with the TCT engine as it's a very similar head design in the valve and cam department. In practice it rarely breaks anything as the engine is nearly, bunt not quite, not-interference.

If a TCT belt breaks the valves do suffer a little damage usually, I suspect because they are a lot bigger than the XUD ones and the pistons are dished so the edges get caught.

Hi Nigel, I agree with John, the paperwork is only worth so much. FLUIDS ! ! Check them all. Smell , feel and colour. You don't mention whether it's an auto, but fluid condition especially critical here, along with smooth operation. These are good indication of how well it has been treated. All the start up checks with hydractive selected to " normal ", airbags and abs. ALL ELECTRICS. The usual mechanicals as per above posts. The BTE engine is not noted for head gasket issues, these issues seemed to be resolved with this engine evolution. The Lucas EPIC pump if run only on diesel likewise will give no issues if regular water drain and filter replacements have been done, worth asking if " alternate " fuels have ever been used.
2 area's worthy of a quick peek are the long run on the ancillary drive belt, from the a/c compressor to the crank dynamic vibration damper pulley, excessive flap here will indicate tensioner and idler change, and the crank pulley itself. Black particles or cracks in the elastomer indicate a change, you may also see marking on the covers.
Exhaust system still has cat, MOT failure if removed, it was original fit.
You know your way around a Xantia, all this applies to the XM.
Good luck, a great find and likely worthy of a little extra attention.

S1 Sinker cars dont suffer the Flapping Aux belt problem like the later Anti Sink cars with the spring loaded tenioner.

The Altinator/Air Con belt has a manual tenioner, which has sort belt lengths along it. Adjusted by the altinator...

The HP pump is on a V belt and on its own tension by adjusting the HP Pump..

Never had a moments issue with Flapping on these.

Hi All, I assumed the year was correct, a 2001, if a 1991 then maybe i'd better delete my post, as with the exception of the fluid checks, NONE of it is applicable ! !

I did actually repair my BX TZD with a secondhand camshaft and bearings that I had in stock but still had to replace some valves - went on for years, probably more by luck than judgment though.

How can a 2001 XM be an SED?
Not with bent caps and a cracked mountings I am afraid the head is shot on the xantia so uits a new head or new engine.
plus the gearbox was jumping out of third gear anyway so thouyght I'd move on to something a little more refined,
12 month gear oil changes didnt do me any justice did they?

actually looking at the rather highly priced 2.1 SEd manual there are some pretty good later models available for half the money
which seem to be as good or more orrigi9nal that this one.
thanks everyone for the advice I wish people would just let the xantia issue go now
Ive had her 9 years and for a second hand motor I think I had a pretty good innings in 9 years.
my health is not that good to be able to be outside all day working on car engines and the fact that I cannot even lift without
ending up requiring major surgery that doctors wont let me have makes it even worse for me. I'm a trained mechanic to.
I was once known at work as the human forklift lifting snooker table slates & building the tables,
it did a lot of damage to my body multiple hernias that are so near the brink I can't have them repaired with surgery
it is to dangerous to have them repaired. so the Xantia must die if i cannot find someone willing to repair her
I just have to let her go and move on to something else as cruel as it may seem she is resting now.
out of all the cars I have ever owned I absolutely loved that car, the money pit I called it.
or Shitroen when she made me mad.
I asked Martin at Pleiades my local independant to help but he says his workshop isnt big enough to change out the engine for asnother, even though another engine is available, I would rather pay someone to change the engine than buy another motor
but no-one wants to do it. so I have to the best of my physical ability tried to get it done.
Nigel.

S1 or S2 is down to interior design.

Theres plus and minus in S2 cars over S1.

The S2 dash is a resembleance of the Xantia Dash.
Door mirrors are more usefull
Left hand displays, rarely work, but are repairable. S1 displays will ALWAYS work, but are not cross compatible
The brake light test was dropped from S2 Cars.
S2 cars have a slightly more reliable ABS system but only after 1996 N reg.
S2 cars seem to suffer rusty areas a bit more then S1 Cars, though ALL need checking carefully.
S2 cars are more refined.

These are some just off top of my head.
