The problem with the HDi's I have looked at is the lhm is neglected, I even found one so overfull with dot 3/4 brake fluid, which is criminal in my book.
and the engine the oil isn't even on the dipstick so oil starvation is a problem
or they are burnning oil, not many people love their HDis as the forum goers do. :)
I think people are having to commute more these days to get to work and they simply arrive home late when it is dark and dont have the time to put a little drop of oil in the car, there are far to many used cars that are neglected beyond belief.

The HDi is a victim of its own success really Nigel and will stand any amount of abuse and hence what you find when looking at examples of them that are not as well loved as they deserve to be.

They take silly amounts of punishment before complaining.

Peter.N. wrote:I put off getting an 8 valve Hdi for some time before Paul persuaded me and I haven't regretted it but wouldn't like to tackle a 16 valve, the 2.2 I had for a short time was fairly trouble free but dreadful on fuel, the 8 valve is excellent. Having said that the next best engine is the 2.1 in the XM its smoother than the Hdi and almost as economical, I think it was the best IDI engine ever made. The XM is also a roomier and more comfortable car.

GO ON Peter. the 2.0 16v HDi only has 4 more valves then the XM 2.1 engine!! REMEBER: They were a 12v head engine, 3 per cylinder! The 2.0 16v is really FAR FAR FAR Better then the 2.2 engines, and Also the 2.0 16v will also see 50mpg.. You really cannot compare the 2.0 16v to the 2.2 early engine, they are worlds apart.

well after all the tooing and froing I have decided to put the Xantia in a garage who says they can lift off the old head and put on a replacement for £300 so that is what is happenning.
I shall be collecting and paying for the engine That Xac has on the FCF soon as a doner for the head. a new head gasket cam belt and pulleys and tensioner new water pump and the car should be back on the road again. maybe in a month or so.
New head gaskets do tend to change the caracteristics of engines sometimes so I am hoping all will be well with this one.
thanks again very much to all who contributed to this thread I shall be watching though as my interest in XM's hasnt faded completely away.
regards.

Nigel, that's the most sensible thing to do as you know the car well and it's always better the devil you know..

Doesn't stop you getting an XM for fun and pleasure though ;)
