Buying steelies for XM's

I bought 4 new michelins engergy savers twice now, for 440 euro's for 4 incl. 23% VAT. That's all fitted-balanced etc.
Equivalent of £350? They last longer so are well worth the investment.
Don't go for Bridgestones, they were 280 euro's for a set but last only half as long. (front ones that is, only about 15K) Hankook wintertyres is what I use, 360 euro's all inr and quite comfy be it a bit noisy of course. I would go for new in any case. Safety first etc.etc.

I can vouch for the Michelin Energy Savers (new). Have them on the TD in 195/65/15. Very good all-round. If the comfort aspect is especially important to you, don't look further -they have the softest wall I've seen on a tyre, you can fully bend it with just 2 fingers, it's unreal. For periods I swap these for 195/60/16 Bridgestone Potenza 300s (or "300RE" or so) (new) and the difference is noticable -on some pieces of my daily motorway trip, there is a kind of small tremor added to the ride, guess from the type of surface variation that's mostly absorbed by the tyre wall rather than the suspension -tiny things the eye can't see. Other than that though they didn't ruin the comfort as I expected they'd do. Cornering grip especially is at another level, on the other hand -these BRs have the hardest wall I've seen on a tyre (and they're not that low a profile).

I am picking up Pauls (soon to be my) XM diesel next week - probably Wednesday 13th. I am not sure where you want the wheels delivered to, if I can do so I will on the return journey, but if not, they can go in the garage for a short stay (I am very tight for space at present) until you can pick them up from Iver? Let me know if you still need the pick up.

Agree with comments about Michelin Energy Savers: quiet, grippy, great ride and long life. Seem to be a thoroughly acceptable replacement for the original Michelin Primacy's, no longer available in many profiles.

I have them on my Activa and love 'em to bits. An excellent tyre.

That's not good for me Norman. I invariably replace tyres because of sidewall cracks rather than tread wear and I notice the Michelin Energys' on the back of the Xantia V6 have begun to crack but in their defence m'lud they were a pair of NOS tyres dating from 2009 fitted in 2011...

Years of tread left on them though...

I note the tread pattern of the 2009 Energy is quite different from the 2012 vintage Energy fitted to the Activa. I wonder if it's just the pattern or if anything else about them have changed?

I have these fitted to the Xantia i have got in as well as the XM.

I find them a bit to soft at the front for anything but ultra sedate roundabout negotiations so tend to go for slightly stiffer ones upfront or what ever remoulds i get a hold of.

On the Activa i had a tried some hankook tyres with a very stiff sidewall and the grip was a decent heap better than the avons that were fitted before to it

I think with the newer versions the rubber compound changes and thats all.

Do you prep or cover your tyres at all Jim to help delay the cracking? Something like a Silicone spray may help with the aging of them
