Shane..MeInKiev wrote:Paul, I see there are 52 pages in this thread, and perhaps I can read more later, but I see it was an engine out job (everything out job by the sound of it!), so probably won't answer my question. My question relates to my S1 '93 XM CT 2.0 turbo petrol. It almost certainly needs a new clutch, and I am wondering if I can change it in situ? Jim said he has done it on a Xantia but passed me onto you as having more experience on an XM. The pedal is going close to the floor before disengaging. I am presuming there is not much or no adjustment there, is that correct? Any other details or advice you can add would be most helpful?citroenxm wrote:Ah what an experiance.. dooing up and sorting an xm Then selling it...![]()
Yes im regretting it.. but needs must. Money more important while theres no job.
Onto the next now.. nothing to see here. Our time has finished.
I shall pass onto the next owner either this blog or to start his own under his own name ...

In my experiance if a clutch is biteing at the bottom id say it was rather new!! A worn clutch will bite near the top..
Unless theres a cable issue.. i think they are auto adjust..

The cable is auto adjust by means of a sliding grip in the spring section. Is the correct cable fitted and is the clutch juddering at all?
The test for a worn out clutch is to perform a slip test. Engage high gear with the park brake on, then rev the engine and dump the clutch. If the clutch is good the engine will stall.

My only experience of a slipping clutch was on my 2nd YBL, that was only noticeable at around 2000 rpm at full throttle going uphill, below and above that figure, the point of max torque, the slipping stopped. The car and clutch I believe had done about 290,000 miles mind

Next time I get near it I will try it for slippage, which I know how to do. You see the strange fact is i bought the car sight unseen, then because of prior commitments could not even drive it home, which was left to a friend to do from Brisbane to Albury (1600 kilomtres), and both he and a mechanic in Brisbane say the pedal is going almost to the floor before disengaging. So I still have not seen or driven the car myself!! Hoping I will be home for Christmas to give it a spin (the car that is, hopefully not the clutch!). They tell me it is not slipping. Perhaps I will check if it has the right cable in it.

As Paul can testify, I stalled the car twice with its newly fitted clutch because it bit so far down! Once used to the position (each of my cars has different gear and clutch characteristics - it's a pain many times) it's absolutely fine!

There are only two cables, one for the BE3 gearbox fitted to low power petrol engines and the other for the ME5 gearbox fitted to everything else.MeInKiev wrote: Perhaps I will check if it has the right cable in it.
The BE3 cable is effectively longer.

Failure of clutch to disengage until the pedal is pushed into the carpet is a classic sign of broken auto adjust on the cable.

I have fixed that problem by making a spacer from a suitably sized nut, cutting a slot in the side and sliding it over the inner cable on the gearbox end.

OK will give it a try Peter. I suppose the auto-adjust is inside the bell-housing? If this is the problem then it saves money and time. You fellows are worth more money!
Could that possibly be the same on the CX? Because I have the same problem on it?
