XM Vin numbers

I have never really thought much about how a Vin number is made up, but I understand the sequence is as follows:

Make Model Car ID
XXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXX

Here are a couple of my XM as examples:

1989 V6 Exclusive
VF7 Y3AG00 00AG0999

1992 2.0 sei turbo
VF7 Y3AX00 00AX1256

Is it reasonable to assume that the first 2.0 sei for example would be numbered say 00AX0001, or would it be 00AA001, or might that be the first XM? My question really is are the letters in the car ID model specific, or could you possibly get two XM with the same ID? Please do let me have any comments.

Many thanks Ken, although it was not decoding I needed but rather a desire to understand the car ID sequence. If my first suggestion is correct then of the two examples given the V6 Exclusive is no. 6999 of that model and the 2.0 sei is no. 25,256. It might make sense in the case of the V6, but as the 2.0 is an early example and only released that year could they have produced as many as 25K so quickly? With regards, Matthew T.

Interestingly my two mid-1990 production V6 have chassis numbers ending 01AG7721 and 02AG7470 with a difference of only 10 between the RP! As all three cars have 'AG' that suggests to me that the first V6 XM was 00AG0001. According to the table of figures recently posted the total V6 production between 1989-1990 was around 25,000 cars and as 00AG0001- 02AG9999 makes almost 30,000 cars I think my theory does make sense. The usage of the 11th digit is interesting, I don't think it is sequential with the serial number, as it is a 1 on my ES9, and there were certainly fewer than 9999 ES9 BVMs built.

Many thanks for that and I had forgotten the earlier thread! Amongst other things I now know that AG means V6, which does after all repeat elsewhere in the Vin, while AX is 2.0i turbo. On the use of the 11th digit, it seems for the early V6 that the series ran together as for my two cars the RP are just one week apart, unless it distinguished the manual and auto box fitting? For Peugeot, the vin number is quite systematic, ( http://www.bba-reman.com/forums/Topic122354.aspx). Pity Citroen did not use the same scheme.
