Cleaning a fuel tank

Post by red_dwarfers » Mon Mar 17, 2014 11:02 pm

I would like to clean my 605's fuel tank as it's got more horrible gloopy rubbish in than I'd like. So much so that it's caused the pipes to semi block up and the injection pump to die. What would be the best technique?

Is it possible you could fish out a sample of the gloop, then see what solvent might mobilise it: eg
- petrol or other solvent (careful with plastic parts!)
- clean diesel or paraffin/kerosene
- hot water + a biological washing liquid (for water-based gloop) .

A standard caustic cleaner followed by a really good jet-washing cleaned my Merc tank out. It was a tank out three times effort before it worked properly, there was no reward with half measures.

I think the 605 uses the same body pressings as the XM.
If the tanks are also identical it might be worth seeing if you can get a spare XM one to clean up then do a swap.
