Lurker emerges
I'm on my way to collect this
viewtopic.php?t=6010
From Phil.
I've had an XM before. A turbo petrol VSX hatch with full leather I think...
I also have a CX Gti 25 which has been my daily until I broke it last month. It has to come off the road for ever Al months to get fixed and I need a newer daily and decide that an oil burning tdi was just the ticket.
It's taken some weeks to arrange collection. But looking forward to owning one of these again.

Re: Lurker emerges
Thanks for pulling me up! Force of habit.
In not a stranger to the psa diesels as one of thd best cars I ever owned was a BX tdz estate.
I'm actually more experience a mechanic on diesel engines then on petrol. I ran an engineering company and had to become competent with diesel engines or go bust paying mechanics very quickly.[WHITE SMILING FACE]
It's also why we don't have a common rail injection engine in our house!...did I mention that I hate diesel engines[WINKING FACE]?
Anyway much that I would rather have a 3.0 v6. Since moving to the country from Edinburgh I needed to cut fuel costs and get a long range car for business use...xm ticks all the boxes for the 1500 odd mikes I do a month for work. This one has a Bosch pump as well. Having been using a CX25 Gti, a 1985 XJ6 and a Volvo 850 T5 estate as my dailies over the last 6 months I can't tell you how mice it was to be able to drive the 370 miles from Devon to Hexham last night on half a tank of diesel!
So back to the car...there's nothing like a 370 mile high speed drive to identify any issues and this car now has a to do list as any vehicle that has covered 170k does.
Firstly and as a priority are the mechanicals. It needs a service..oil, atf filters. I'm also going to remove the throttle body and inlet manifold and get all the crud out of there. This will then enable me to make a call on how much life is left in the top end. I've noticed a puff of smoke on accelerating but couldn't see the colour or density.
Next on the list is the gear and throttles cable.
Kick down is non existent so likely jammed with gunk or needs replacing.
The gear box was slightly sluggish last night and I also noticed that at points it was struggling to fix into gear..usually after a rapid requirement to drop down. This was very evident on the hillier bits of the A68. Now first off has to be to change the atf and see if it irons itself out. I suspect this will probably do the trick. The car has been sat for several months as it took me a while to collect and Phil had moved onto his spectacular Aventine.
The gear selector us very mushy and indistinct which makes me suspect the bushes are badly worn. Any pointers on what rebuild kit I could use or suggestions. My previous xm was an auto and the selector was pretty snappy.
Other than that it's in rude health. Just needs to be used as any car especially highly complex diesel ones need regular use or niggles develop.
Quite a few other things on the list including painting the nose cone and repairing the drivers seat with that bit of cloth that's been following the car around through several owners[WINKING FACE] pig of a job and I might get it done professionally.
Anyway. I think the first 2-3 tanks of oil will be quality brand diesel. Let's get the system cleaned out so i can assess thd condition of the engine and give it a good starting point for veg burning.
Drive up last night was relatively uneventful apart from some examples of lunacy by w different range rover sports. One of which the driver must have nodded off as he or she overtook me at 120 mph on the A1 before very nearly ploughing into the back of another car 1/2 a mils ahead of me. The driver realised at the last minute and just swerved out the way.
I decided to do A1M rather than M6 mostly because it is easier to stay awake on the A1 and I'm fed up to the back teeth of the M6. I stopped at Wetherby for an hours kip at 1230am and had to come up the A68 from Darlington as the A1 was shut north of Durham for some reason. So it gave me a chance to put the car through its paces On an a road and identify the gear change issue and remember how hopeless the headlights are on dipped beam!

Re: Lurker emerges
I cant fault psa s 2.0 8v hdi engine and im a big fan of them. Ive got a xantia hdi with 283k on it all original so far. I think they are the best di engine and the best from psa. They lost it big time teaming up with ford for the 1.6 16v later engines but thats another story for else where.
the 2.1 with mechanical pumps get my vote. I beleve a derv should give economy and them and the hdi do. Both get into the 50mpg groups.

Re: Lurker emerges
I've no experience of psa hdi engines...mostly Ford ....hateful things! I used to do tdci repairs on Fords by word of mouth ..kept the holiday kitty charged.
Usual story...short journey syndrome. Owner takes it to Ford who charge a fortune gor replacing injectors when sell it needs is a bloody good clean. Nasty plastic inlet manifolds clogged up, jammed egr valves. Snot bacteria in fuel filter...clouds of uncombusted diesel and limp home mode... solution...
Strip down and clean system, replace all filters remove or blank egr or replace, send injectors off for testing and a clean. Put it all back together, plug in laptop and set up injectors and tell owner to only use cheap diesel if going on a long fast journey and otherwise every 2nd tank needs to be good stuff...that or add detergent to the cheap fuel...charged about 400 plus thd injector test costs and parts. Many happy customers as they were so frustrated with Ford ..sadly main dealers have no interest in supporting customers of this type computer says injectors playing up...solution ...replace injectors...no effort taken to consider WHY they were playing up. Result...very angry customer who is essentially being ripped off. Sadly many so called mechanics these days are merely fitters.

Re: Lurker emerges
Agreed.. I have a lexia and I look after a number of xantias for people locally because most garages are too scared to.
the 8v hdi is a daamm good unit. Psa kept it to them selfs bar suzuki vitaras from 2000 to 2005 who also got them fitted.
It gives little trouble what so ever. Look on ebay at peugeot 406s many with 200,000+ miles on them. I hope to get my xantia to 300k this year or early next. The engine still doesnt touch a drop of oil or water now ive just done the cam belt and water pump again..

Re: Lurker emerges
Interesting reading. I wonder why people keep buying Fords or cars-engines they get frustrated with. Good luck with that 2.1TD, they are economical and reliable. Disconnect the EGR if not already done so. I'd be checking the whole car over so you can start off completely confident. Don't forget to look at the health of the camshaft wheel or what's the word:)

Re: Lurker emerges
Just spent 4 hours stripping down and rebuilding sunroof. Removed quite a bit of silicon. Diagnosis. ..
-rear main seal internal rubber is detached along most of its length
-starboard side cable snapped
-main winding cog stripped
-badly rusted glass frame under seal.
Solution ...I think we'll replace the whole cassette with a good one then rebuild this for a spare.
I've put the glass back in and taped along the edges with insulating tape for the moment. Once I've gathered the parts together ill replace the cassette
