Do I rotate wheels? Well not the Xantia ones, up for grabs, still lying around here. I only rotate winter tyres and put 4 new Michein energy savers on Liz' car last week.

Been reading up on these threads, and learning a lot about thee cars. I take it the BX flexible coupling doesn't fit an XM then - there are 2 sizes for the BX by the way.

Well apparently not, although they look similar. It would be very interesting to compare the three discs. I will save the knackered XM one.
Andrew Weston did say it looked similar, but everyone I asked said it was a unique disc. But I wouldn't be at all surprised to find it is a BX one.

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto Dead?

Well, what a horrid day yesterday was. :(

I was enjoying a nice drive up the fosse way to the CCC national and then made a huge mistake and joined the M6, the junction before Cathorpe interchange. I was waiting in traffic in the slow lane for joing the A14, when I was hit behind by a white LDV Van. :(

Essentially what happened, the white Van cut up a lorry, who couldn't brake in time and thwack, he hit the Van which hit me and I hit a Fiat Scudo van in front.

Long story short, I got the car home and it is sitting outside the garage safe and secure in the streets private gated lane.
Everyone was okay, just stunned and dazed. I did however wake up this morning with a slightly sore neck. But otherwise totally fine.

Amazingly the front is I think very reparable. The back not so. I have only just taken everything out this afternoon, and the boot floor is buckled quite badly and the rear seat back is jammed in place! The rear subframe I think has twisted round a bit, the boot opening is deformed and the rear doors are firmly jammed shut.

Here is the evidence.....

And now begins the insurance fight. write off.. Most likely. Total loss has already been mentioned. glossed over that for now! Of course it is not of my fault., just peedoff I didn't get to enjoy my resealed fuel pump for longer than two weeks. It was going so well too.

Bloody hell Russ!

I'm so sorry to hear about this and the fact you had to experience it, worst of all it wasn't your fault.
I don't know, the damage might be repairable, I don't know enough about bodywork to comment, but one thing I will say is that where insurance is concerned it's almost certainly a write off.
With XMs being 'old cars' to an insurer theyre worth about 50 quid and even a broken headlight would write an XM off in the eyes of insurance with their 'approved' body shops and genuine parts only it would cost a clean fortune.

I think if you want to fix the car you'd be looking at accepting whatever they pay out and buying it back at salvage value, then footing the bill for the bodywork yourself. To us of course they're worth much more than the sum of their parts.

Just totally gutting, it's such a lovely XM and you'd been getting a load done with it recently. Am just very glad you nor anyone else was hurt.

You have my sympathies, I pranged my grey S1 (my own fault, skidded in torrential rain and rear ended a BMW which stopped suddenly because a Focus pulled out in front of him), I was kicking myself for months, just so gutting.

I hope this can have a good outcome, hopefully someone else can advise a bit more in depth.

That looks like a category B write off. No chance of repair. Very sorry to see it. I hope you will be looking for another XM.

Thanks Ciaran, bit of a shock must admit. Everyone is fine.
I think the front is easily repairable, it's the back that is the worst and will no doubt be the decider. It's a write off. No insurance company is going to look at that and say yes lets repair.

What hurts the most, is the car was slowly being brought back to a very good condition. And now it's all gone. Gutting as you say. :(
