XM pricing

Post by NigelO » Sat Jul 26, 2014 8:16 am

Hi all

I'll try to keep the story brief......

I work for an Italian car specialist in central Birmingham. Mark, an ex-mechanic and very good friend of the owner of the garage recently died from cancer at the age of 46 and his girlfriend has asked us to dispose of his cars. We've already sold his M5. The XM is next, and then the TVR (he got the daft car bug pretty bad... )

The owner of the garage is Citroen trained, so we'll be able to answer any questions. However, what we really need is for someone with their finger on the pulse to tell us what its worth and maybe even assist with selling it on to someone that will be able to make good use of it.

Until Mark's death in March of this year, it was in regular use. Not sure if it has any tax or MOT on it, but it certainly did in March. Its the 2.1(?) diesel and we believe its the Executive model. I've seen the car many times and it was in very good condition. I understand it has a couple of minor niggles (something to do with the dash display)

Is anyone in central Birmingham interested in having a look and guiding us on a price?

Thanks in advance

Nigel

Hi Nigel

Not that good news I am afraid.
Early XM's are just edging towards Classic status.
Face lifted XM's (1995 on) are still generally working cars.
A good early car in exceptional condition might make £1.5 to 2.5k.
A poor one is scrap value £200ish.
Later cars are generally disliked by most Citroen enthusiasts mainly because of the Peugeot style interior.
There are still a few exceptional later cars changing hands in the 2k range but I guess less than 10 a year.
Ultra low mileage seems to be a key factor in getting above average price.
General later cars £200ish with problems and no MOT.
Working with long MOT £500 up.
There is a large following for hydraulic Citroen cars but not a large turnover as most keen enthusiasts have already collected.
In the last few years European LHD XM's have dropped in value enough for keen collectors to import.
Attractions are some unique Citroen hydraulic features not available in UK RHD and virtually rust free body shells.

Thats a brief summary as I see it.

Critical will be the actual condition of the 2.1 and its useage and maintenance history.
Damage to any of the jacking points, strut head rusting or body shell rust will immediately warn most buyers.
Not got time to go any further with this.

Regards

John

Hi John

Thanks for the reply - I'll find out some more about it (mileage, rust issues, history etc) and post back here

Turns out its a '95 on an 'R' plate - how do we know if its a facelift or an early model?

Most likely a Mk2, but easy checks are:

Mk1's have the chevrons on the front offset, while Mk2's are central.

Mk1 rear spoiler os on 2 pillars, while the mk2 is more of a lip attached directly to the tailgate.

Mk1 dash is more squared off than the mk2.

I'm new here, so if any of the above is wrong, I apologise and I'm sure someone will be along to correct me.

Hi Nigel,

Sorry to hear about the circumstances with your friend.

If it's a 95 car, unless it's been sitting around unregistered for a very long time, it will be a facelift, or series 2 as we call them.
You can see the exterior differences here -

Series 1:

Interior / dash:

Series 2:

Dash:

Those are the main cosmetic differences between series 1 and 2, the front grille, rear spoilers, wing mirrors and of course the dash and crucially, the single spoke steering wheel. Other than that the cars are structurally the same with only minor mechanical differences and some electronic revisions, the biggest difference for enthusiasts, as John says, is the series 2 Peugeotised dash.

That said, even if it is a series 2, if the car is tidy, well maintained and without body issues you should get something for it. Rest assured if it is a well loved example and it goes to someone on here it will be going to a good home :)

Having looked at the photos (thanks Ciaran), we're fairly confident its a Series 2

We'll try to get some photos and a bit more information

Hi Nigel

If you have not already look for reference at the 1998 2.5TD exclusive car 132k miles for sale on here by makay1.
A top of the range car in very good condition.
Quite a bit of interest but not sold yet.

It will definitely be a Series 2 at either 1995 or R plate, which is 1997.
