Breakdown cover renewal time!

Post by kingp » Mon Aug 11, 2014 4:30 pm

Anyone got any reccomendations that are cheap?

Im thinking i might give ADAC a try as my cover expires at the end of this month and last time i wangled AA Recovery cover for £49 for the year by using quidco for £30 cashback but this year the same cover seems to be nearly double that from all places and the renewal i got from The AA was £189!!!

Looked at greenflag et all and all seem about the same and tbh with the citroens i cant see them repairing them at the side of the road and doing their normal and just towing them back to mine most of the time.

I use Autoaid for my cover. £39 a year for me and swmbo for any car we're in. Only set back is that you must pay up-front should you break down and then claim it back.

Be wary of Green Flag, who seem to be involved with a lot of the inclusive insurance deals too - they'll recover you to wherever you want, but only the first so many miles are free, then you pay by the mile. A friend got caught out that way when the gearbox failed on her 2CV, and she got a shock when the recovery driver gave her an invoice for almost £100 and demanded immediate payment before her car was offloaded at her house.

It's probably not the cheapest, although I get a big discount both through Citroen Car Club and their own no call out discount, but I've been with the RAC for years. I don't bother with basic roadside repair or tow to nearest garage, but pay for the free recovery to the destination of my choice. This is because with some of the cars I drive, and the tools I carry, if I can't fix it on the side of the road 9 times out of 10 neither can they, and I'm fussy about what garages touch my cars.

It's also worth checking what their policy is on recovering cars like ours - I know that the RAC's own people aren't allowed to tow them, they have to be loaded onto a transporter to move them, and most of the transporters have long ramps, blocks etc. in order to load them without damage. I've heard of others refusing to recover a vehicle because of the risk of damage while loading.

If a hydraulic issue occurred I'd be insisting they just book a low loader anyway :)

Might avoid the green flag one then, and to be fair I've had good value out of that as cover as it brought the xm from Stockton to Anglesey for work and then another incident as well was brought back here as well :)

Caravan Club of G.B. was outstandingly good, and operates whether you're towing or not, Europe-wide. RAC brings you free legal advice (can be handy), and the AA (iirc) brings you advertising, or certainly used to.
