Insurance companies spend a great deal on advertising. They like to have a good reputation. Most of them have a 'cheap' year where they undercut everyone else and get increased market share, but make no money (or even lose money). They then proceed to up everyones insurance next year, hoping that most will stay with them as they can't be arsed to change. Bad publicity makes these tactics harder and much more expensive.

So, informing them that you reserve your right to publicise any correspondence you receive regarding your treatment in newspapers (who always like a hard luck story), social media, blogs etc might be an option if they want to really play hard ball. They will try to 'bounce' you .... play the long game .... they WILL make you a better offer when they realise you are not going to be a good little boy and play their game. Its cheaper for them to cut and run.

Very good point Exem. The power of social media might have to be used. :D

Well I have officially now told them, if they want to contact me at all, it must be in writing.
A letter will be composed in a few days outlying in much of what Charles has mentioned. Let the games begin....

Russ,

If a third part hits you and you're claiming against their insurance, NOT your own, you are legally entitled to be put back in the position you were before the accident occurred. If the 2.1TD for sale at 2.2k is the same as the one that the third party hit then you can either ask them to revalue your car, or pay you out a suitable amount which would allow you to purchase that car.

Never, ever accept their first offer either!

I'm going through the same thing at the moment after my Range Rover caught fire two and a half months ago!!
