To mudflap or not to mudflap....?

Guys im looking for advice here....

Looking to ease the load on the front sections of my cills, is fitting mudflaps a good idea or a secret rust accelerator?

Im thinking it will help them getting battered with spray etc when driving....could only be a good thing...no?

Mud flaps are useally attached to the Wing Lip .. but to me Vince Helps HOLD crap in place.

See my Posting on crap behind the lower wing.. The easyest thing to do is to annually pull the plastic liner forward and get the crap out!

Me, I advise against them, also see my 24v blog.. BUT however, others probably will vote for them.

The OTHER issue is, falling suspension. If they are rigid ones, suspension drop will push against the flaps, and distort them as the car settles down..

None of mine had them and I'm pleased they didn't. I think they do trap damp and muck and could help rot take hold. I'm not sure I like the look of them either.

I will counter the existing arguments. I advise fitting them, I live in the countryside where muck and crap is plentiful. Mud flaps keep a lot of it off the sills and lower doors. I always fit flaps to mine, and can't say they make the car rust more or less. Just keep it cleaner. I always drop the car on the deck when fitting them so that they don't get caught when a car sinks or hits its bump stops.

Must say I agree with Robert, certainly if living outside of a town. Without front mudflaps we get a load of mud and stuff along the sill and lower doors. We ran one XM with and one without and the latter is the one I've just forked out to have the sills replaced!

The mudflap stops muck spreading along the sill, getting into crevices and holding moisture. But Paul's right it certainly collects all the crud in the lower wing area. I hit the mudflap area with a pressure washer frequently in winter which helps.

We had plenty of mud in Surrey. Here we have plenty of gravelly and stony tracks. Mudflaps a must!
Only downside is when you try to reverse up a kerb!!! (Don't do this.)

Hhmm i can see both sides of the debate on this one.....i would keep them clean of crap build up, and they would protect the cills well.....but then do they ruin the pure shape of the body?

Conundrum this one.....well for now ill follwo my own philosophy....if you cant decide then leave it alone until you do

Can't remember whether there were two types of genuine Citroen mudflap available: rigid and flappy. I have the rigid ones, and think they look the part.

I like my (rigid) mudflaps- but I have sometimes wondered if the car would be quieter at speed without them?
