Hi Chris & Mike

The standard ABS problem I am afraid.
Detailed instructions on fault repair that apply only to one particular type of the 3 different XM ABS systems.
The relay repair instructions are for a Teves Mk4 system.
Mikes car has a Bendix system where the relay and ABS diode are encapsulated on a dedicated component board.

I have now located a listed another batch of PSA ABS vehicle systems in the post above.
Up to 25 variants now as each system was modified to suit each particular model.

That's interesting. I can recall abs faults on my tzd BX and my old XM. Both mysteriously cleared up after new winter boots are fitted.

Mike,
You have checked that there's no debris - in particular metal filings/dust - clinging to the magnetic ends of the wheel sensors? This can accumulate, and plays havoc with sensor behaviour. Sorry if asking the obvious.

No I haven't. The reason I think it's voltage related is that the battery is rather old (7 years according to the history that came with the car), and the issues usually happen when it's been stood a couple of days. With the daily runs it's had the last few days it's fine, although the Hydractive light has decided to stop lighting up now (although the message on the screen still comes up). This latter I think is a dodgy connection somewhere that I have to hunt out.

Nice to know that XM owners can topic-drift just as well as other Citroen owners! ;) Has been an interesting read though. Hoping to get my hands on my own XM within a week or so.

Consider that when the ABS is running its start up test the starter motor is also engaging as well as the glow plugs running.
So if the battery cannot put out enough volts and amps the car will not be able to start.
I suspect that low volts on the ABS ECU is a red herring.

I have added a bit more info to the rouge ABS posting.
This will get copied into a proper ABS post one of these days.

I used to find with my old CX's that if the abs light didn't go off properly first go, switch off, re-start, job done - definitely a battery voltage issue.

Having just look at the CX Bosch wiring diagram I suspect that your CX had a weak oil pump not a battery problem.
Very strange design but that version of ABS monitored the engine oil pressure switch.
By second start the oil pressure would have built more.
