A very sad day ...

Post by Peter.N. » Tue Dec 09, 2014 12:20 pm

The windscreen replacement people came out to my XM this morning and declared it is to rusty to fit a new screen so regrettably it will be going for scrap unless anyone wants it for spares.

Its a ,96 2.1 manual estate with a Bosch mechanical pump, the body is a bit tatty but it was mechanically good when it was on the road early last year. It has no MOT or tax so will have to be trailored away.

Very sorry to hear this.

Which rust were they unhappy about? Any chance of a picture?

Its the rust around the windscreen frame, he says the windscreen will not stick to it. He showed me where the glass has come away and the water is getting in, but its not just there its at various places all round the screen. The windscreen will have to be removed and the metal made good before a new one can be fitted, not cost effective I'm afraid.

Chris

Not done a tremendous mileage in this one, its only on about 150k in total, it was my last XM purchase and I had retired by then but in my previous XMs I have probably knocked up over 400,000 miles, I was doing 30,000 miles a year at one time, previous to that I had done around 200,000 miles in CXs.

Surely the pump has to be saved, if nothing else.

Preciesly!!!!! My thoughts exactley, the 2.1 TD pumps are a bit thin on the ground!!

IF you take anything off Peter, which I HOPE YOU do this time, take the pump off at least!!!

I sold a 2.1 pump a little while back, is it worth enough to make it worthwhile taking it off?

I think the car will have to go Paul, sad though it is, the end of an era for me. its not worth anything as it is and to make it really tidy would cost far more than I could get for it, if anyone else wants to try its there for scrap value.

Peter I can weld it for you if you want? I'm only down the road.
I also have a good friend who was an AA windscreen technician who could remove and fit a new screen.

If you do decide to get rid for scrap value I'd almost certainly be interested.

Paul
