Rear strut house dampness looks like LHM from possible recent Sphere changes... Has she had recent rear spheres Rob??

I MIGHT have a full 2.0i exhaust in the shed! I know its not a TD one, and not a V6 one...

Its in very good order too! Im not saying you need one, yours looks all ok!

Its interesting how all the rear section of front subframe is - damp? Where the leading section under the rad is bone dry.

Its also damp looking along the bottom of the gearbox. This to me would indicate a possibly weeping / dripping regulator/Flow divider allowing LHM to blow back across everything when driving forward!

The area of rust on the front outrigger section you spotted is a very common area for rusting out now. You may well find that once you/welder man start digging it will end up a larger area.

Something like this on a K reg SD I had in last year, looked like yours, and ended up..

So, a bit of work...

Overall Rob, nothing untoward looks bad under there. I note you have ABS too... the ABS rings look in good order.

Sadly, I dont think we can buy any XM out of the Anorak ring without the need of any welding needed in this area and the sills at the rear.

Looks very tidy under there Rob. Even your spare wheel carrier looks to be in good nick.

She has had new spheres all round plus new accumulator. Ride height was reset at the same time. This according to the invoice that came with the car.
The MoT advisory was a weeping power steering pump.

I agree there is scope for the rust to grow :( Owned too many BL products :)
We will have to await the outcome of the grinder. It will be all my own work. Fire up the MIG!

Put my name on it! Cash awaits.

The middle box is toast and I can see from the service history that she has had mild steel replacements. I expect that with a bit more use other bits will start to fail.

Are you going to make the trek down to Birmingham for the Classic Restoration show, end of March? I will be there with the XM as its first major outing (oh and collecting the daughter from Uni).

It would be good to meet up halfway (Ho Ho! See you in Wrexham then!!!!)

The rust as been attacked. Both sides gone under the bottom edge of the front wing and start of the sill around the jacking points. Not as bad as the pictures above!

All the O/S cut out, surrounding areas treated with Hydrate 80 and awaiting the MIG and fresh steel on Friday.

Annoying but fixable. Nice that a) the MOT tester decided to ignore structural rust next to a jacking point and b) that the people who fitted the front wing just slapped it on over obvious rust!

Photos to follow once I have finished the job.

If that's the footwell floor at the top of those cavities, I'm wondering about drilling a hole there, and injecting wax into the cavity. Would rather do that than drill externally. Maybe another way in?

Have re-protected and waxed the whole of those corners externally, but obviously need to do the internal space as well.

O/S now all welded up and first coat of zinc primer applied externally. Next stop brush on seam sealer and then a couple of coats of rust proofing waxy underseal to keep it all black and lovely. There is already an external hole where the clip for the fuel return pipe is attached. I will high pressure cavity wax it through there before refitting the clip. Don't worry there will be a lot of wax in the whole car by the time I have finished.

A good day!

Replacement regulator fitted and working a treat. Window goes up all the way and down all the way!!!!!

O/S front welding now all sealed and treated. Black and lovely.

Next job, turn her round and repeat the exercise on the N/S.

Diagnosed noisy exhaust as poor seal were the manifold meets the downpipes so have obtained new wire seal and fitting kit.

Hopefully a straightforward job.
