Some pictures

Head ready to go back on

Shiny bits to go on

Many gaskets to replace

Head gaskets: initially I thought the new one was wrong due to the small coolant holes on it. Then realised the old ones were enlarged due to serious corrosion. The many flakes of wich had piled up inside the engine block and took hours to remove

Re: Anthracite XM 2.0 SEi Turbo Manual
Next
New thermostat, plastic housing and cleaned up casting alongside the new cylinder head bolts

Checked and cleaned the turbo - it was manly on the outside but inside out wad clean and span well with no bearing badness

Originally I'd wanted to take off the exhaust manifold from the top of the turbo and four out to the head on the bench. I couldn't for the life of me remove the last and fourth nut to do so, so it had to remain.

With help from an assistant and using a makeshift host it was eased in to place. No determinanable warping to the block face

Intake manifold, throttle body and it's sensors, fuel rail. Only the latter was not cleaned tho the injectors were relieved of theit black grot

This is what came out the sump.. Oil shouldn't be this colour! This was brand new oil changed two weeks ago

Ready for fitment. This is just after the head was tightened

Re: Anthracite XM 2.0 SEi Turbo Manual
It's beer running well- starts well, sounds quieter actually ( might be my imagination) and goes well. Heats up better due to new thermostat. Engine idle still a bit of at times and still had exact same problem when cold so no change there.
Coolant level has dropped a small amount twice; Sunday night before any journeys, and checking at lunch today. Took Healy any but still keeping an eye on it. Might just be air purging. Hope so!
Will fee keeping am eye on it

Suspension feels horrible and crashy at the front-end think the brakes are sticking
Outside work today lunch time

Re: Anthracite XM 2.0 SEi Turbo Manual
Still runs weak from cold - runs and idles fine when a few miles were covered.
Just had a headlight go out. They're not very old the bulbs so I went to investigate it and it sprang back to life!
I also modified the lhm tank filter block/return pipe block to try and prevent the air bubbles circulating. It has been covered in the past but after I found the amount of bubbles being sucked up after fitting the clear suction pipe. The air being sucked in at the tank via cracks in the plastic was actually a red herring after the bubbles continued after it was bypassed.
When the suspension height was changed from top height to driving height or low, the returned lhm bubbles up something rotten and it's picked up by the pump suction.
The cause is the returned fluid enters the top of the block through the moulded elbow without air in it then drops down into the surface of the lhm in the tank and this causes bubbles to form in the tank. I first discovered this while topping up the fluid to notice the sheer amount of bubbles that were formed and immediately sucked up by the pump ( amazing what you see with clear tubing)
Anyway, the solution was to fit a pipe extension from the top of the tank return pipe elbow straight down to the bottom of the return filter. Funnily enough this is what the large return pipe has(from regulator, fdv and PAS) but not the suspension returns.
Anyway it has totally eliminated the return bubbles and now the pump suction runs neat.

Re: Anthracite XM 2.0 SEi Turbo Manual
Sounds like a good provisional fix.
I don't have a cross-sectional drawing of the LHM tank handy, so not sure whether suction (take-off) from the tank takes place at high or low level. If aerated fluid is being returned to the tank at the top surface of the fluid, then it's a reasonable assumption that take-off should be from the bottom --- bubbles rise, then burst.
Do you reckon this is the case?
Well done on the top-end repair!
