Wanted: Sphere Pressure Tester

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Post by David Hallworth » Mon Mar 02, 2015 7:40 pm

Looking for a sphere pressure tester, anyone got one gathering dust that they don't use?

Ta!

If you have lots of free time, can collect the necessary parts, have welding/brazing skills and the equipment to do the work, you can manufacture your own tester, like some have done. I think I have the skills and equipment and could find the parts, but decided to pay for a precision instrument. You may have seen this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3556&p=35924&hilit= ... ter#p35924" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This tester is not cheap, precision tools never are, but it is beautiful, takes little space, no mess with oil spills, accurate and very easy to use.

Mine is not lying around gathering dust, not just yet - I intend to keep the XM for a few more years. I use it twice a year or more often when a problem arises and I need to know the spheres are not the ones that cause them. I loathe having to guess. My dealer does not have sphere testing equipment. Probably Citroen does provide genuine testing equipment - if someone has any info on that I'd like to see it - but I don't think it is anything like the compact sophisticated tester I have. When my XM days are over the sphere tester will be up for grabs as I will have gotten my money's worth by then :lol: Sorry for this rant ;)

For what it does, it isn't that expensive, if you need to be long-term self-sufficient. Same with the Tecnosir kit, I think. As Jan says, it removes all the guesswork.

If it came to a toss-up which to get, I'd go for the Tecnosir kit first, which enables re-gassing (even sometimes necessary on 'new' spheres!). The Tecnosir kit, used carefully, can also be used to get a fair idea of how much gas remains in a sphere, but not as accurately as Jan's kit above.

Acc sph is 62bar, Cap'n.

The first time you use the Tecnosir kit, check where the hose flange face abuts the nitrogen cylinder valve. I found the metal-to-metal flat face leaked slightly, no matter how tight the nut was done up. Had to add a thin flat rubber washer to make it gas-tight. Any leak shows up on the HP gauge, of course.

I've got the genuine Citroen version of the tecnosir kit :) I won it on eBay for the pricey sun of a tenner a few weeks ago.

I'm thinking of making two pressure testers, one to use LHM and the other to use LDS for my C6 spheres.

If anyone has one they want rid of I'll rehome it, otherwise I'll have a crack at making my own sometime.

Just had a quote from Citroen to check the spheres on my C6 of 4/5 hours at a cost of£400+ then the price of replacments on top, so I said that thank you but no thank you. Must have a word with Martin at plaides.
