I am very happy to report that the XM started very quickly, idled properly and no smoke on start up. So that was very much worth while doing.

So next job is to identify where the oil leak is coming from. Hoping it's the turbo return pipe.

I presume you've got one of those miniature socket/ratchet/6mm-hex-bit sets on sale everywhere? Mine goes from 3mm to 13mm sockets, with a selection of small tommy bars and a UJ.

Couple of tips for replacing small nuts you can't fit with your fingers...

- Using the appropriate small socket, put a dob of (conductive) grease in the socket, and insert the nut with a second or even third similar nut behind it to bring the main nut to the nose of the socket, so it isn't recessed. Then screw on.
If sockets tend to fall off extension bars, put a bit of pvc tape round the join.

- A steel nut can also be securely perched on the end of a crosshead screwdriver (larger than the nut hole) by magnetising the screwdriver first. Poke the pair towards the end of the stud, and gently screw on a thread or two to get it on and started.

- A variation on this is to wedge the nut in the end of a bit of tubing, and screw on - gives the option of going round gentle bends, and coping with non-magnetic nuts.

I used blue Tac in the end Chris. I could just about get a finger with the nut stuck to my finger tip with a spot of blue Tac and that worked.
I would be very interested in your mini ratchet if it fits.

Space is so tight it's quite difficult to get anything down the back of the pump. Step spanners worked for me.

BlueTac sounds good. Must confess to not having worked on an XUD since my BX19RD days. Sorry about that.

Cheers Chris. That's interesting. birthday has been and gone... The day I swapped the glow pug relay infact!

I have a great little ratchet which is really compact and thin. And even with a small socket on it, you can't get it onto the first plug. So that's how miserable the access is.

Now this one is easy! Citroen were having a good day here... It's a small black box bolted to the front of the battery tray. One plug and two ring connectors underneath.
