I recently read one Japanese, survived both bombings within a 2 mile radius. Incredibly lucky..

Quite right, Dean.Dean wrote:The older I get the more recent it seems.
When a child, your future extends before you like something interminable a unknowable.
As an ageing adult, your past (and recent history) just seems like yesterday.

Yes Chris, all of a sudden life seems very short, as a child you feel like you will live forever and a year is an eternity, funny how the mind works and perception of 'Time' changes.

That's the sanitized version of history, the one the US wanted everyone to believe.Awefull thing, i dont want to rub anyone up the wrong way either but it probably saved lives, certainly in the short term when looking at a full scale ground invasion of Japan.

Re: Hiroshima's 70th
Indeed the Victors write the history books and all that, there is always two sides to every story, both of which are wrong with the truth being somewhere in the middle. The fact does remain that the Japanese didnt look like they were about to roll over and their leaders desperate towards the end of the war, with no surrender likely any military action would have resulted in massive casualties.
Of course the Americans were probably itching to have a pop at Japan for Pearl harbour and show the world (Russia) its new toy at the same time.
Nobody will ever know the real reasons or circumstances around a lot of attrocities that happened during the war, what we should learn is that the War never really got anybody anywhere but thats a bit idealistic tbh, we arent wired up for peace unfortunatly and never will be.
