Has anyone carried a petrol XM engine/gearbox assembly in the back of an XM?
I don't know the weight, but I'm guessing it'll be ok as it must be the equivalent of carrying 4 or 5 heavy passengers

. The suspension will take it but I don't want to ruin the rear wheel bearings.
Cheers
Marc

You should be fine, Marc. The car was built to carry a full passenger load, a full tank of fuel, plus a permissible towbar loading of 100kg. Good idea to put a slab of board on the boot floor to spread the loading. The ride should be superb!

Good stuff. It'll get the back brakes doing some real work for a change!

If it is an estate make sure the engine is reasonably well forward with the gearbox at the tailgate end.
Get the engine CoG behind the rear wheel centres and the steering goes a bit light.

I brought a 2.1 diesel engine and gearbox plus a load of other bits back from Newcastle in my 2.1 estate, and picked up a P100 diesel engine in Derby on the way back, no problems at all except it was a bit slow up hills.

I have also transported a V6 engine and box that was tightly packed on every side with other parts. I must admit it was then necessary to remove a few items and redistribute the load as the rear end could not quite pull off the bump stops. I then drove home to Norfolk from Brum and all was fine although the handling did feel somewhat different! Regards, Matthew T.

Try and get most weight over or forward of the rear axle, that way it should lift up OK.

Carried 160 3kg bricks in the back of my estate and just under 3m' of wood once with the back seats down. Couldn't see out of the back 5 windows mind and very noticeably affected handling, acceleration and braking but did just fine. Also pulled a 2.6ton Range Rover 8 miles up and down hill with it and the rear end only went funny around a rust spot

I took a Audi 5 cylinder turbo engine, box and ancillaries to Italy in mine.
Self leveled, drove nicely and did 46mpg
