Wanted - '93 2.0 Turbo Manual Gear linkage

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Wanted - '93 2.0 Turbo Manual Gear linkage

Post by oxford XM » Sun Mar 06, 2016 10:01 pm

Hi,

I've recently picked up a 1993 2.0 Turbo XM (this one in fact - viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7449" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Unfortunately I'm coming to know it as the 'beached whale' as it's sitting kerbside unusable at the moment

The gearbox is toast. Fortunately there seems to be a suitable replacement on ebay right now - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351656299062? ... c6e2034155" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

unfortunately I also need the linkage (don't believe that's included in the above). Does anyone have one or know any good places to try asking? So far all I've discovered is a stonewall of unavailability for anything parts at all....

I understand Peugeot 605's also used the same gearbox (ME5T) - not sure which models though? presumably the linkage from these is comparable? there's this available right now from a 2.0 605:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-605-2 ... 1912977141" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

not sure if I'll need more than just those rods though and I seem to only be able to find little bits of linkage for sale, would be nice to get everything especially as I don't know which bits specifically will be needed (and I don't want to order bit by bit or the gearbox without the linkage as don't have room to start piling this stuff up in the hope of having a complete set maybe months down the line).

Also: incorrect LHM pipes were fitted and it is spewing fluid everywhere. I understand the pipes are now unavailable and it doesn't seem possible to get a substitute. May be able to find a local solution but what do the experts here suggest about this? ;)

finally - driver's door window needs new regulator & motor. Low priority for now but again, seem to be low availability/in high demand... was told there's a difference in number of pins etc between models... which models are compatible? anyone got one? ;)

thanks!

Hello Oxford XM,

Looks like you have taken on a bit of a project!!! Just like all the rest of us!!!

I can't offer much technical help (there are plenty of folk on here who can) or spares (ditto)

I am however not too far from you if your handle reflects your location?

I am based over in sunny Wiltshire but work in Didcot (Yes I know it is a stupid commute but a job is a job!)

PM me if you want to meet up and discuss XM's or even pick my very limited knowledge.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!
It was good to hear from you and especially as the new owner of one of my old XM, which gave good service between around 2006 and 2014! As you will have gathered, quite a lot of work has been done on the car, mainly by myself and Graeme in Glasgow.
I find it difficult to believe that the gearbox need replacing, although I acknowledge changes could be a bit sloppy, probably due to a worn lever assembly and/or linkages.
Please let us know exactly which hydraulic pipes are troublesome and I am sure that replacements can be sourced or made up.
Regards,
Matthew T.
PS. Does Oxford XM come from the reg. plate?

Motorhog Doncaster have a white 1992 2.0 in. It's been there a hell of a long time. They tend to have everything you want but are very expensive.

I got three brand new linkages for mine totalling almost £50 so they aren't a bad price. Don't be caught into getting exactly the correct linkage with the correct part number. I was surprised at what I could make fit mine.

My rear OS window winder and OS mirror came from the Motorhog car! Fast service and well packaged but pricey.

Yeah I've seen that one but I believe it's a non-turbo model which had a different gearbox so the linkage might not be compatible?

they do also have a gearbox from a 2.0 turbo on ebay - I actually thought the prices were quite cheap! - but no linkage for that one from what I can gather. Typical! :(

where did you manage to get the new linkages?

Yeah I've made a bit of a habit of this right now - surrounded by malfunctioning vehicles - I think I might snap soon and have a clearout :?

yep, am in in Oxford.
Certainly, if I get the thing up and moving... :/

2nd is inaccessible, 1st bad, 3rd sorta OK. I took it to two garages and they both advised gearbox replacement... I wasn't surprised to hear that from my brief time trying to operate it. Weren't very helpful otherwise (unfortunately my (over)-helpful usual garage shut down at christmas & am having to test the waters with new places).
I haven't checked exactly which pipe(s) are defective but will deal with them only if I can get the gearbox together anyway I think.

I'm actually in oxford (well, just outside) so the car has 'come home' :D
this is my actually my first foray into french automotives (previously I'd joked that I only used axis vehicles - italian/japanese/german) so I'm not familiar with Paul Johnson, from a little searching it seems like he might have shut down a few years ago - retired I guess? shame, would be nice to have an expert garage on the doorstep (and reunite the car with its 'father' :P)

In relation to the gearbox I would check and if necessary replace the linkages first as these boxes are not known to fail and it is rather mysterious that the problem has arisen. A fluid change would also be worthwhile since, although theoretically sealed for life and topping up only required, I did drop the oil out once myself. Hopefully you received the quite extensive history with the car and the original registration was actually in Worcestershire I believe. The XM Centre became the Citroen Centre and then closed about five years ago and they sold the car to the owner before me, a young Irish couple living in Slough. I replaced both the registration plates based on the existing rear plate. With regards, Matthew T.

Paul Johnson did indeed close the XM Centre a few years ago and retire.
It was not his choice but Thames Water terminated the lease on all the units on the site.
Once aware that this was happening I collected some of the stock of XM bits finding homes for some others.
A box of dead dash displays, some documentation and a brand new alloy wheel for Matthew spring to mind.
I also negotiated for a pair of very good condition strut heads.
The eventual deal required removal complete with the 2.5 estate they were fitted in.
Paul was someone it was a pleasure to deal with and get advice from as are most Citroen Indys.
How to fit cruise to a 2.5 was one example from my early XM days, just told how to do it, no charge.
So few of those with this sort of expertise continue to trade and those that do have had to diversify to survive.
Perhaps amongst other things a testament to how little most of us want or perhaps can afford to pay to run our cars.

John

He was great with the C5. They get a rattle in the steering coloumn, Citroen advises complete replacement only for it reoccur. He had a great little fix for it, which saved a bucket load. I believe his staff went to another garage which he was directing old customers too. But that was a few years ago. Shame he retired, knew Xm's inside out.
