I will formulate a list of wants later next week and see if you can help.

Hope you had a good day Thursday.

Anybody following this little adventure I would like to ask a favour, if you see me building the engine back up and putting the exhaust back on could you gently remind me it wont fit out of the door with them on!!!!

No...but we will encourage you to setup a video recording of taking the completed engine out of the shed...

Would that be helpful?

ER or casualty or some rubbish was on tonight so i had to "go and clean up the mess from todays work down the garden"..................

Oil in the V from an unknown source, may be nothing
Imagephoto(41) by Deanxm, on Flickr

I performed a hand cranked compression test with all other plugs out (bloody hard going) most of the inlet valves arent seating well at all but look clean, higher compression cylinders have a tan colour to plugs, lower comp cylinders have black rich looking plug tips, one plug has rusted away.

Front bank return water way was (until i broke it out) completely closed off with a hard crust, there were some nuts stashed in the water pump outlet, gearbox bell housing and exposed spark plug recesses.

I need to get the crank pulley off to release the timing chain cover, the chain and guide blocks look very good which would confirm low miles, chains look very good too so will probably just clean and re-use, once the timing cover is off i can get the heads out of the way and check each of the bores to make sure there is no corrosion and the rings are free, if its all good i can start stripping the heads down and get them off to Fred for any required machining work.

Sad facts for the night, the 4HP18 autobox uses the same final drive and gear ratios for all injection, turbo and V6 engines, only changes were made the the bell housing adapter plate and valve body, all auto boxes use the same drive shafts aswell which i kind of knew but its nice to confirm it, that will make life easier.

The exhaust flange from the headers is also the same size as my injection engine, the injection 8v reduces pipe size after the cat where i guess the V6 does not so i should be able to fettle the new cat i got to fit if the one on YOG is a bit too tired.

Looking good so far.

I don't follow that bit. Surely the different engies use different gear ratios, otherwise a V6 will only have the same top speed as a 2.0i.

It is the wheels that make the difference.
1.875mm compared to 1.920mm.

Yes i noticed that John, the V6 box is fitted with a different speedo drive ratio to compensate, i was surprised myself, all gear ratios are the same across the range of petrols at least, as are drive shafts.

2.0i is 125mph ish and the V6 135mph ish so there isnt a massive difference.

This V6 uses a lot of the 2.0i ignition/injection components as well.

Dean, the oil is HIGHLY likely to be from me, i used to put my oil drain tubs on the top, its a good chance one has tipped in the mayhem mess and spilt a bit..

So its a full strip down and engineer then?? I intended a straight drop in ... but with known plans I can see why...

I thought it may have been a spillage (rustproofing) Paul as i could see no leaks on the engine.
Its a dissasembly to make sure there are no rodent leftovers where they shouldnt be and make sure its slumber has not caused any issues (blocked water/oil ways) and then the main goal is to renew ALL gaskets and seals, the valves need lapping in as they leak and new stem seals to make sure she will do another 20 years service without issue.

Of course i want to see if i can remove the hydraulic followers for solid ones on the other engine and see what makes it tick for said future plans.
