I would either flush the tappets out or strip and clean them ad nothing else until after a test proves they are faulty.

I would ensure I ran teh engine out of the car, once it was built up.

The engine will run on the bench yes, i dont want to have to pull it out again.

Mileage is not the enemy with seals but age is, many years sat idle in damp conditions with no oil will do more hrm than sparing use, the tappetts seat inside the rocker fingers with an 'O' ring seal, some are loose and some are holding tight in the rockers so replacing the seals is wise (i think) finding them is another matter alltogether.

I must add the total list of parts a page back ive ordered have cost a smidge under £120 so on ballance of cost V possible inconvenience later its worth doing.

I now see mattews confusion with the chains as every other oddfire PRV has radically different timing positions but similar timing marks (no ballancer shaft either), there seems to be a timig difference between post and pre 94 engines that had a larger bore so i can see care must be taken.

if the engine has sat around for many years in the damp with no oil I guess you are right to be concerned Dean and certainly I would not want to have repeat the work! I am very interested to know how you plan to run the engine 'on the bench'. After my experience I would mark the chains and sprockets before removal and I am surprised to hear there are timing differences for later engines. In the end I found there were logical reference points on the sprockets, but I just wanted to be sure!! Regards, Matthew T.

Ive not seen differences first hand but the citroen documentation states that static timing was altered for the later engine, ive been able to find many timing instructions but none are marked up like the XM engine.

Not looked too hard yet though, thats a problem for later!

Did you take a picture of the timing gear before dismantling the engine?

Sourcing O rings will be easy, in any dimension or material. Let me know if you are struggling.

Im not sure of exact dimensions yet, they are square section seals i think, i will try to measure them up when i get to it again.

To run the engine out of the car i will stand it in a home made steel frame with a rad piped up, engine loom will be plumbed to power where required to liven up the ecu, the starter is easily activated and i have a spare fuel pump i can stand in an old lemonade bottle of fuel.

I suspect he O rings won't be square section by design, but have set in a compressed state.

I did yes but i always like to set it up from the book on reasembly if i dont know the history of the engine, i like to know the timing is right, especially if i see white marks on the timing gear from previous works where the factory marks have not be used.
