Dean wrote:I have been watching roadkill for a few months now, its pretty enjoyable even if it stems from a different sort of car culture, most of my favourite shows are on youtube now which maybe spells the end of corperate television in the future, bit off topic but it seems a lot of people now watch more youtube style private productions than actual TV, still dont think you can beat a BBC documentary though, David attenborough etc.

I agree, I think TV as we know it is changing to something totally different. It is completely undermining the license fee, which in my opinion is now very outdated. I wouldn't be at all surprised if all Tv ends up like Netflix. Programs made by production companies and then they are available to watch at your leisure. It's happening already really.

There is a lot of rubbish on YouTube, but there are some very good informative shows too. MCM is great fun and I have also been watching B is for build, where this guy rebuilds crashed cars. Current project, which is nearly finished, is a Lotus Evora.

There is a tonne of rubbish on youtube alright but like you say plenty of gold too, i did watch that Evora build up untill he made the apology about the windscreen saga, its a good show, should catch up really.

Today was almost a whole day of tinkering, i really need to clean the shed out now as i need a clean clear space because things are getting dangerously close to needing to go back together or painting!

heavy oxidation and oil buildup removed, cooling system scraped out and flushed and that really needed doing, the feed pipe into the rear bank was completely blocked with corrosion and mineral looking deposits

The sump baffle was removed and the crank case cleaned out, the baffle was held in with 1/2" bolts, obviously, with it being designed and made in europe, for european manufacturers and containing nothing but metric fasteners!?!?. Didnt take a photo of that though as i was busy.

All clean and ready to go back together, the sump has been off at some point and re-sealed but there is no gasket and looking at the sump mating surface there should be one so im off to trawl the net now to try and find one

I have removed at least two of these Dean and never seen a gasket therefore I think like the timing chain cover only sealant is used. That fitting with the brass pipe in the first photo is the rear cylinder bank drain as I sure you will have picked up. Regards, Matthew T.

Yes got that Matthew, thanks, had to strip it out and clean it/ grease and put back together, i will be fitting another to the front bank in place of the blanking plug currently there.

I have just come to the conclusion there was no gasket as nobody lists one, the shape of the sump mating surface itself would suggest a gasket should be used though, not really ideal shape for just instant gasket, i would think two flat surfaces would be better but i guess being a pressed steel pan its not going to be perfect.

Toyota do similar - one machined flat surface, and one pressed-steel snake. With the correct goo, it works fine.

Thanks but i will probably have to go backwards a little now, ive noticed a liner has moved while cleaning the water jacket, i had to take one of my home made liner retainers off to access a very crusty area and ive gone to put it back on and the liner has leaned forward in the block by a couple of mm....................

I think im going to have to drop the lower crank case and pull the piston assembly's and fit new seals..............the alternative is put the heads back on and pressure test the water jacket but if it leaks then its two head gaskets down the pooper, if it leaks in the car i will be somewhat miffed. Stupid mistake to make but it was a bit silly to go this far and not replace the seals, especially given the state of the water jacket. Balls!

YOG has landed!
ImageV6 XM by Deanxm, on Flickr

Connected a battery to test but unfortunately water has entered the vehicle and the alarm went off straight away, the keypad came up with red and green lights and then went dark, then there was lots of clicking, then the starter activated itself and tried to cut my hands off so I called it a day and lifted it up on top of one of the shipping containers for fiddling later.

I think the rain entering the electrics has really annoyed YOG

Perhaps it was brought over on the roofrack of a submarine.

The car now loks ike it should appear in a syfy film. I bet every time the lorry passed a scrap yard and kept on going, people were saying "You're going the wrong way."
